- Final Thoughts
Adorable vintage twin babies with their old-fashioned bottles are adorable with their puppies nearby. We’ve come a long way with different types or styles for the best baby bottles that you can choose for your baby’s specific favorite.
Sometimes it’s tricky finding the bottle and nipple your little one likes in his or her mouth. We are the same way. I prefer to drink my coffee from a porcelain mug and not ceramic and it must be thin around my lips not fat.
1. What Bottle to Decide on?
The only way you will know if your baby likes the bottle you thought he’d like is to try it and go from there with the many styles available and discussed below.
Babies can become gassy easily so buy bottles that reduce bubbles. For moms who nurse, it’s a good idea to buy the same brand baby bottles as your breast pump. That way you are pumping your milk right into the bottle your baby can use later when you aren’t around. The same brand bottles as your pump will fit precisely that specific breast pump.
If this baby is not your first baby, you will at least want to buy new nipples if not new bottles.
2. When to Use a Bottle if you Nurse Baby
It takes from 4- to 6-weeks for a baby to get the concept of suckling at your breast. If you give your baby a bottle too soon, baby might prefer a bottle over nursing close to you, mom. Of course, that’s less effort than nursing, however, once baby learns the correct way to nurse with you, he or she will not choose the bottle over nursing from you.
You will not want to wait too long, so if you wait longer than 6-weeks, your baby might turn down a bottle.
3. Fussy Baby Using a Bottle?
When I was giving my baby daughter a bottle she would sometimes get fussy and be struggling to get the nipple to dispense milk—or water or juice. I realized I needed to get the next nipple level so the milk or other liquids would flow.
If milk is drooling from the corners of your baby’s mouth, the hole is too big so you’ll need a smaller hole nipple.
By the way, the bigger the number the bigger the hole. Newborn infant nipples are identified as level 1.
4. Fussy Baby With Gas?
You know how uncomfortable and miserable you are when you have gas, yet you can get up and move around—babies cannot.
To help your baby avoid those gas pains, always hold your baby with his or her head higher than his tummy. You’ll want to check to be sure the nipple is filled up with milk or baby will be swallowing air with a loud sucking sound that will cause gas.
Always burp your baby with a towel on your shoulder every few minutes. If he or she spits up on your towel, gas is probably the culprit.
5. Other Possibilities for a Fussy Baby
If your baby is fussy while taking his bottle, he might have a wet or dirty diaper. That would make us uncomfortable and not want to eat too.
If baby is drinking breast milk from a bottle, maybe you ate garlic, onions, or spices that he doesn’t like the taste of.
Or, maybe your baby isn’t hungry just now. Does she have a fever? Do you need to try a different type/style of baby bottle?
6. Heat Baby’s Bottle or Not
My baby did not like cold or room temperature milk. Most all babies like their milk warm. You can find a wonderful baby bottle warmer and combination sterilizer here for doing the job quickly. Babies like what we like: too hot?—so are babies. Too cold?—so are babies. They will become fussy if their little bodies are too hot or cold. Same with their food.
Use a sterilizer to clean your baby bottles to remove all bacteria. They are handy gadgets and will save you time using hot water and detergent with a bottle and nipple brush. I loved the one at the link for my daughter.
7. Glass or Plastic Baby Bottles
Personally, I like glass and that’s what I used. I don’t like plastic anything in my kitchen. But that’s me.
Obviously, glass baby bottles can break and the broken glass is a job to clean up. Glass is a bit heavy, yet glass is sturdy and has no chemicals that could harm the milk.
On the flip side, plastic baby bottles won’t break and are lightweight and strong. Before 2012, plastic baby bottes and sippy cups contained BPA (bisphenol A). In 2012, the FDA (USA Food and Drug Administration) banned the use of BPA. The chemical could lead to certain cancers, changes in the brain, reproductive system, and early puberty. All plastic sippy cups and baby bottles sold in the USA are now BPA-free and that’s a relief.
To further support us, the FDA in 2013 banned the use of BPA resins in the lining of baby formula cans.
8. Three Types of Baby Bottles
The 3 types are:
- Plastic with Disposable Liners
If you use older bottles made before 2012, know these things.
- Check the recycling symbol on the bottom.
- #7 or PC (polycarbonate) means the bottle might have BPA.
- #1, #2, #4 are made of polyethylene (PE) with no BPA.
- #5 is made of polypropylene (PP) with no BPA.
Bottle liners that are disposable are usually BPA-free; however, look for BPA-free on the label to be sure. These must be changed after each feeding so are usually more expensive then bottles without liners.
9. Tips For Caring For Your Baby Bottles
- Never store breast milk or formula in plastic bottles. Pour the milk into the bottle just before your baby is ready to eat. Throw out anything that is left over.
- Don’t use hot water or a harsh cleaner on polycarbonate bottles, because this also can cause the plastic to break down more quickly. Instead, use a gentle cleaner and warm water. A microwave sterilizer is ideal for this task.
- Replace any glass bottles that have cracks or chips in them.
10. Baby Bottle Styles
Standard Neck Baby Bottles
These are made of either glass or BPA-free plastic.
This style is inexpensive and has a nipple and ring. It’s easy to clean using a sterilizer and easy to warm with a bottle warmer; this is a warmer/sterilizer combination and is great.
Extra features do not usually come with this style baby bottle.
Wide-Neck Baby Bottles
A popular style is the vented-type that can prevent gas and colic, and even reduces the air being swallowed by your baby. The wide design imitates mom’s natural breast feeding.
Angled Vented Baby Bottles
Ergonomic angled shape promotes a healthy, semi-upright feeding position which can reduce ear aches, reflux, and gas.
1-piece integrated venting technology means no extra parts to clean or lose.
The silicone nipple rapidly releases air bubbles into the bottle, not baby’s tummy.
100% BPA-, polycarbonates-, PVC- and phthalates-free made of FDA-approved food grade material.
These are more expensive and harder to clean.
Vented Baby Bottles
The milk bubbles stay in the bottle and not in baby’s tummy. The one-piece venting system reduces the possibility of colic, gas, reflux, and fussiness.
These are easy to clean with only 3 pieces and most are dishwasher safe.
Most fit most standard breast pumps and are 100% BPA-, polycarbonates-, PVC- and phthalates-free made of FDA-approved food grade material.
Disposable Baby Bottles
These you use and throw away.
They come pre-sterilized for the bottles and nipples.
Being portable, there is nothing for you to do.
You can buy disposable liners known as drop-ins for existing bottles as well as the disposable baby bottles. The liners are a plastic pouch that goes inside a baby bottle.
They are more expensive than the bottles you keep.
Please read my best baby bottles reviews below to help you know what to buy for your baby. I am not reviewing Tommee Tippee because moms tell Amazon® that the nipples collapse, plus not many moms are buying this brand since the slow-flow leaks. Check it out and see for yourself at the link.

5. Medela® Breast Milk Bottle Set
The Medela® breast milk bottle set model number 87132 on Amazon.com® is a best-selling baby bottle compatible with Medela® breast pumps and others.
The set includes 3 each 8-ounce milk bottles; 3 wide-based medium-flow silicone nipples; 3 each medium-flow silicone nipples 3 each collars; with 3 each solid lids and 3 caps.
Each silicone nipple is stamped with an “S” for Slow-flow or an “M” for Medium-flow.
Wide base slow flow is for 0- to 4-months.
Wide base medium flow is for 4- to 12-months.
Plastic bottles and component parts become brittle when frozen and may break when dropped. Also, bottles and component parts may become damaged if mishandled, that is, dropped, over-tightened, or knocked over. Take appropriate care in handling bottles and components.
The nipple flow is medium with the 8-ounce bottles and slow with the 5-ounce. They are dishwasher safe but you should wash the yellow collar by hand.
The measurements are on the side.
Medela® does not recommend the use of bottle liners as anything placed into the bottle can interfere with the valve assembly causing lack of suction. If you wish to use a bottle liner, pump into Medela® bottles and then pour the collected breast milk into the bottle liner.
This set would make a nice baby shower gift and for yourself too. You will receive instructions. The bottles are made in China.

6. Philips® AVENT Anti-colic Baby Bottles
The Philips® Company has been trusted by moms since 1984. They make great products and the model number SCF403/37 on Amazon.com® is one of them. This is the #1 brand globally and a top seller on Amazon. It’s more expensive but well worth it for its softness and nipples.
The Philips® plastic bottles are clear and available in pink and blue. They have been proven to reduce colic with its special valve made right into the nipple vents. This keeps air out and the milk up in the nipple so that your baby won’t have gas pains and be fussy.
Choose from 4-, 9-, or 11-ounce bottles. With only 4 parts the assembly is quick.
Philips® AVENT newborn nipple has a single hole, so newborns can learn to eat with the slowest flow. Babies can control the milk flow like they do with breastfeeding that helps reduce overeating and spit-up.
The Philips® AVENT Anti-colic bottle range offers different nipple flow rates to keep up with your baby’s growth. Age indications are approximate as babies develop at different rates. All nipples are available in twin packs: newborn, slow, medium, fast, and variable flow.
